Universities UK (UUK) Code of Practice for the Management of Student Housing
Newman University has affirmed membership to the Code of Practice for the Management of Student Housing. The Code is concerned with the main principles and essential requirements for well managed student accommodation. It also should assist you in understanding both the standards and the procedures applying to your accommodation and your obligations as a tenant.
The main elements covered by the Code are:
- Health and safety standards and procedures
- Maintenance and repair regimes
- Environmental quality
- Landlord and tenant relationship
- Student welfare
- Anti-social behaviour and disciplinary procedures
- Administration of, and compliance with, the Code
Further information regarding each of the above elements is included in the Accommodation Handbook which is available in each bedroom on arrival and on the internet for prospective students or on the intranet for current students.
TV Licence
Television licensing law applies to you whatever device you use when you watch live TV.  From 1 September 2016, a change in the law means that anyone who downloads or watches BBC programmes on demand – including catch up TV – on BBC iplayer needs to be covered by a TV licence.  You may not be aware that the refund process may mean that you are eligible for a refund as most students only require a licence for 9 months a year (October-June) rather than for the full year. A student who buys a licence in October will therefore be able to apply for a refund in the following June, assuming they will not be returning to the address between July and September. For more details visit .
Privately rented accommodation
For those who do not wish to live on campus, our accommodation team can offer advice on finding privately rented accommodation. Renting privately may include extra costs such as utilities, internet access and possible travel costs to get to the university.
Newman University cannot accept responsibility for private accommodation contracts. You are strongly advised to have any contract with a private landlord checked by an appropriate professional before signing.
